Centacare NT is committed to the Catholic Church's belief in the dignity
of every person. In our struggle for a just society we are called to
work with people in ways which strengthen them in community so that
we may all experience the fullness of life.
Operating Goals
- We promote justice.
- We target our programs to service identified needs in culturally
appropriate ways.

early intervention, long term work, education and training and community

As a client of this service what are my rights?
The Centacare NT Aged Care Advocacy Service is funded by the Departments
of Health and Ageing, Family and Community Services and the Northern
Territory Department of Health and Community Services and works to encourage
the rights of elderly residents of nursing homes and hostels.
Our aim is to assist you, on a one to one basis, to deal with the issues
you are facing.
- All information that you tell us is confidential
- You are protected by the privacy act
- You have access to look at the information we keep on file
- We can provide you with a copy of the Privacy laws that protect
you
- All clients of the Aged Care Advocacy program are treated with dignity
and respect at all times
- This Advocacy service has a Charter of Service to ensure that the
assistance you receive is of the highest possible standard
Who do we work with?
Residents of Commonwealth-funded nursing homes and hostels, and people
representing them
We also work with people who have been assessed and are waiting to move
into residential homes
Our area covers Alice Springs, Tennant Creek and some remote areas.
What rights does the Service encourage?
All people, including older people, have a right to:
- Information - about services
- Privacy and Dignity - to be treated with respect
- Freedom of Choice - decision making for yourself
- Good Health - your own doctor, health worker
- Comment or Complaint
- Equal Treatment - regardless of cultural background or other differences
As a Client of our Service you have a right to:
- Honest and fair treatment
- Accurate, relevant help
- Prompt and polite services
- Privacy and confidentiality
- Accurate Advertising
The Complaints Process
If you are not happy with the quality of service you receive then please
follow these simple steps.
1. Talk to the Aged Care Advocate or to the Alice Springs Senior Counsellor
(Centacare NT welcomes any opportunity to improve services to customers).
You can be assured that no matter how big or small your complaint is
taken seriously.
2. If it is too hard to come in and see us, you can call and ask to
speak to the Manger, Family and Community Development. They will deal
with your complaint.

Aged
and Disability Rights Team
A rights service for older people and people with disabilities. The
Aged and Disability Rights Team's service is free, independent and respects
your privacy.
Who Do We Help?
- we help older people who live in hostels and nursing homes or who
get Community Care Packages (CCPs)
- we help people with disabilities who want to know about their rights
and how to get them
What Can We Do For You?
We can give you information, support and help with the law about:
- the kind of care you get when you are treated differently or not
given a fair go because of your disability
- people not respecting your culture
- when you feel all alone and not a part of the community
- where you live
- your money
- what you do for fun
- getting a job, or problems where you work
- help you with other issues about services for older people and people
with disabilities
What Else Do We Do?
- we also teach the community about things that are important to older
people and people with disabilities
- we also try to change the way services work so that they give older
people and people with disabilities a fair go
- The Aged and Disability Rights Team is funded by the Departments
of Health and Ageing, Family and Communit Services and the Northern
Territory Department of Health and Community Services.
Who do you talk to if you are not happy with our Service?
If you are not happy with our service it is important to tell us so
we can do something about it. Please talk to our Coordinator by phone
at 8982 1111 or by writing a letter to GPO Box 3180 Darwin NT 0801.
Or you can talk to somebody at the Health and Community Services Complaints
Commission, which is not a part of our service. You can talk to them
by phone at 1800 806 380, or by writing to GPO Box 1344 Darwin NT 0801.
Darwin Community Legal Service - What Do We Do?
As well as the Aged and Disability Rights Team, Darwin Community Legal
Service:
gives free
- advice about the law, and helps you find a lawyer if you need one
- teaches the community about the law
- helps people who get social security payments
- welfare rights information (for problems with Centrelink)
- general legal service
- disability discrimination service
people who speak your language can be arranged for free
