Support at Home

ARAS provides free, independent and confidential information and advocacy support to older people receiving or seeking Australian Government-funded aged care services in their own home through the National Aged Care Advocacy Program (NACAP).

This includes older people receiving or seeking Support at Home or Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) services.

ARAS provides rights-based and person-centred information and advocacy. Advocates work with and at the direction of the older person, wherever possible, supporting them to understand their rights, make informed choices, have their voice heard and address concerns about their aged care.

Rights when receiving aged care at home

The Aged Care Act 2024 includes a Statement of Rights for older people accessing Australian Government-funded aged care services, including aged care provided in their own home.

These rights include:

  • making decisions and exercising choice about care and services;
  • receiving support to make decisions where required;
  • having wishes, needs and preferences heard and respected;
  • receiving safe, quality and culturally appropriate aged care;
  • being treated with dignity and respect;
  • having privacy and personal information respected;
  • receiving information in a way that can be understood;
  • raising concerns or making complaints without fear of reprisal; and
  • accessing an independent aged care advocate or another person of choice for support.

ARAS provides information and advocacy that is inclusive and responsive to the older person's individual identity, culture, background, circumstances and lived experience.
